Encampment, Wyoming – In a state renowned for its rich hunting traditions, 14-year-old Coy Monroe is making a name for himself as an exceptional young archer.
As the big game hunting season kicks off this October, Coy has already achieved an impressive feat by successfully hunting antelope, deer, and elk—all with his bow.
Early Start in Archery
Coy’s passion for archery began at a young age, thanks to his father, Lisle Monroe, who emphasized the importance of patience and skill in hunting.
“I would not let him take firearms for small game; he had to learn with a bow, just like my dad taught me,” Lisle explained.
This foundation laid the groundwork for Coy’s impressive abilities in the field.
At 12, Coy bagged his first archery kill—an antelope—using a crossbow due to a broken string on his compound bow.
With his bow in top condition this year, he successfully hunted all three of Wyoming’s premier big game species.
Reflecting on his experiences, Coy shared, “Watching an arrow fly and hit where I aimed is just a different thrill compared to shooting with a rifle.”
Determined and Driven
Coy’s hunting adventures took him into the mountains for elk season, where he encountered a massive bull.
Although he did not secure that particular elk, he remained undeterred and ultimately harvested a respectable bull, showcasing his determination and skill.
“I had a close encounter with a 300-class bull; that was a real challenge,” he noted, referring to the coveted trophy measurement system.
Future Aspirations
Looking ahead, Coy plans to take on mountain lions this winter, considering whether to use a bow or a gun for the hunt.
His long-term goal is to achieve the “Wyoming grand slam,” which includes hunting elk, deer, antelope, moose, bighorn sheep, mountain goats, lions, and black bears.
He understands that some species, like mountain goats and bighorn sheep, have tough-to-draw tags, but he is committed to the pursuit.
Beyond hunting, Coy shines in archery competitions.
He recently won the state 4-H archery title and is preparing for a national competition in Las Vegas.
With dreams of securing an archery scholarship in college, he is dedicated to his craft and education.
A Mentor to Others
Coy’s generosity and sportsmanship extend beyond his achievements.
He often gives away his awards, known as “Robin Hood” pins, to younger archers who show exceptional effort and dedication.
“I like encouraging them. If they are disappointed, I will give them mine because I already have so many,” he explained, highlighting his role as a mentor.
With a bright future on the horizon and a solid commitment to hunting and archery, Coy Monroe is set to impact the outdoor community in Wyoming and beyond significantly.
As he continues to refine his skills and share his passion, he will undoubtedly become synonymous with excellence in the hunting world for years to come.
