The Canyon Crest Academy Foundation is set to undergo an independent audit following a report by two students that raised serious concerns about its financial management practices.

This decision comes after allegations that the foundation has been redirecting a substantial portion of donations for student clubs toward general management expenses.

The students, Litong and Kevin, highlighted that the foundation retains 25% of donations made to specific student programs, such as the robotics team, for its general fund.

This percentage is significantly higher than the standard 5% to 10% found in other school foundations across the San Dieguito district.

“We felt it was important to bring attention to these practices, as they could negatively impact the resources available for student activities,” Litong commented.

In response to the students’ findings, Canyon Crest Foundation President Sandra Sincek expressed her commitment to transparency and accountability.

“We believe the audit will reaffirm our dedication to proper financial management and ensure that all funds are utilized effectively for our students,” she stated.

The controversy has sparked a broader dialogue within the community regarding the ethical handling of school-related funds.

Concerns have also been voiced about the school principal’s alleged attempts to stifle the students’ report and discourage open discussion about the foundation’s practices.

As the audit process begins, the foundation must prove its financial integrity while considering the students’ suggestions for reform.

These include lowering the percentage of donations earmarked for the general fund and increasing clarity around salary disclosures for executive roles.

The outcome of this audit could lead to significant changes in the foundation’s operations, potentially restoring trust among parents and donors.

This situation underscores the vital role students can play in advocating for accountability and transparency in educational funding, ensuring that the best interests of all students remain at the forefront.
