Mayor Montserrat Caballero announced her decision on Monday, revealing that the threats directly resulted from her administration’s determined efforts to crack down on gang activities.

Highlighting the significant achievements of the local police force, she stated:

“We have confiscated more weapons from criminals than any other police force in the country. Additionally, we have made thousands of arrests. Due to these actions, I was the target of an attempted attack on May 17.”

A Permanent Move for Safety

Mayor Caballero believed her relocation to the army base would be a permanent arrangement.

She firmly stands by her commitment to combat criminal organizations and protect the citizens of Tijuana, even if it means sacrificing the comfort of her home.

President Supports the Decision

President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador of Mexico confirmed the move on Tuesday.

He explained that Mayor Caballero had been under protective custody prior to taking up residence at the army base.

The President also disclosed that Governor Marina del Pilar and Senator Jaime Bonilla, prominent figures in Baja California, had also received threats from the same criminal groups.

President Lopez Obrador emphasized the importance of safety, stating:

“This threat was directed at the governor, the mayor, and Senator Bonilla. Although details are scarce, it is better to prioritize their security.”
