Minecraft

Minecraft is a virtual world composed of pixilated landscapes created by players using digital building blocks. Like playing with digital Lego bricks, players can construct elaborate structures and interact within blocky terrains, alone or with friends. Its open-ended nature and straightforward yet deep gameplay foster creativity, problem-solving, and collaboration. With no rules or endgame, players are only limited by their imagination.

Minecraft Education: A Tool for Game-Based Learning

Owned by Microsoft and specifically designed for educational settings, Minecraft Education brings game-based learning to life. Teachers can use the game as a versatile learning tool with endless possibilities. Imagine students crafting detailed models of plant and animal cells to explore biology concepts or designing a creature perfectly adapted to its environment to understand evolution. This method engages and excites students, making learning interactive and fun.

Minecraft Education includes unique features to enhance learning. One of the standout features is the Book and Quill tool, which simplifies the process for students to document and submit projects directly to teachers, combining visuals of their builds with written explanations.

Why Minecraft Education is a Great Entry Point to Esports

Esports refers to competitive, organized video gaming. While many games are used for esports, Minecraft Education is an excellent gateway into this world. Its design ensures that all privacy and security requirements are met, making it a safe choice for school programs.

The foundation in educational gaming allows teachers to adopt esports as an engaging teaching strategy. Julie Mavrogeorge, the Career and Technical Education Coordinator at Fresno Unified School District, oversees esports programming. Fresno Unified actively uses Minecraft Education across all grades, focusing on competitive esports from grades three to eight.

“The build topics are endless,” says Mavrogeorge, now the Program Implementation Coordinator for Gameplan, a company promoting learning through esports. “Teachers can easily align builds with English, mathematics, science, social studies, or any imaginable topic.”

Mavrogeorge highlights Minecraft’s broad appeal, noting its popularity among students as young as first grade. “Most students have already played Minecraft by the time they hit third grade, and many as young as 4 and 5 have played,” she says.

At Fresno Unified, Minecraft Education is implemented from grades one through eight, showing its versatility across different age groups. The esports resources further enrich this experience, offering predesigned environments, known as Make & Model worlds, tailored for competitive play. These worlds facilitate “build battles,” making it easy to organize students into teams for practice, learning, or competition.

Accessibility and Inclusivity in Minecraft Education Esports

Another advantage of Minecraft Education for esports is its accessibility. Unlike many esports games that require high-end gaming devices, Minecraft Education is available on all major operating systems, including Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android (including Android-enabled Chromebooks). This inclusivity ensures that all students can participate, regardless of the technology available.

The multiplayer mode enhances the esports experience by allowing teams to collaborate and compete in a secure environment. The specially designed esports worlds support simultaneous building activities, making it a perfect tool for competitive play.

Getting Started with Minecraft Education

Starting with Minecraft Education in your district involves a few steps to ensure a successful setup:

  1. Licensing and Setup: Ensure that your district meets the licensing requirements for Minecraft Education. Districts with an existing Microsoft licensing agreement may already have access to Minecraft Education licenses for teachers and students, typically included in A3 level plans and above. If not, individual licenses are available. For detailed licensing information, visit the Minecraft Education website or contact your district’s Microsoft representative.
  2. Installation: Download Minecraft Education on the devices you plan to use. Ensure all devices run the most current version of the game to enable multiplayer mode.
  3. Additional Equipment: Touch-screen devices do not require additional equipment. However, if students use devices with keyboard and mouse inputs, providing external mice or game controllers can make building in Minecraft easier.

Launching Your Minecraft Education Esports Program

Minecraft Education offers various entry points into esports, providing customizable gameplay options:

  • Classroom Build Battles: Host competitions within classrooms, aligning builds to specific learning outcomes.
  • Districtwide Competitions: Organize competitions between schools within your district. Fresno Unified, for instance, creates divisions within its district, allowing schools to enter multiple teams with one coach.
  • Interdistrict Competitions: Connect with other districts and clubs for broader competitions. Organizations like NASEF can help facilitate these connections.

“I strongly encourage teachers to join the Minecraft Education Ambassadors Community on Facebook,” Mavrogeorge says. “This connects them with other educators worldwide in the same time zone. It is easy to find other schools, nonprofit organizations, and individual teachers eager to play competitive or club-based Minecraft Education esports.”
