New York: 2-Year-Old Found in Makeshift Cage, Covered in Fecal Matter; Mother Arrested

2-year-old found in makeshift cage in Buffalo home, mother arrested. The child was covered in fecal matter and suffered multiple injuries.

Incident Overview

In a shocking incident in upstate New York, a 24-year-old mother has been arrested on child endangerment charges. Police discovered her 2-year-old son living in deplorable conditions at their Buffalo home, confined in a makeshift cage and covered in fecal matter. The child was also found to have multiple broken bones.

Discovery and Initial Response

The New York State Police announced the arrest on Thursday following a visit to the family’s home on February 4th. Officers were there to serve a felony arrest warrant related to a separate crime. Upon entering the home, investigators discovered the toddler in a bedroom, confined in a playpen covered by a piece of a crib, making it impossible for the child to stand or exit.

Conditions of the Child

The conditions in which the child was found were described as appalling. The makeshift cage and the child were covered in human fecal matter, and fecal matter was smeared on the walls. The child and the bedding were soaked in urine and fecal matter. Additionally, officers found remnants of food, including chicken bones, inside the cage.

New York State Trooper James O’Callaghan described the scene to WKBW-TV: “Bones or some chicken bones. So I mean, it was something where you look at it, and it was disgusting.”

Medical Examination and Injuries

After being discovered, the toddler was immediately transported to a children’s hospital by EMS. Medical examinations revealed that the child had bruising on his face and body, along with two fractured ribs that were in the healing stages. Doctors determined the fractures had been present for at least 10 days, indicating the injuries occurred between late December 2023 and early January 2024. The mother claimed the child fell down stairs during that period but did not seek medical assistance.

The woman was arrested and taken to a police station in Clarence. She faces child endangerment charges. Whether she is currently free on bond or has obtained legal representation remains unclear.

Authorities’ Actions and Public Safety

The New York State Police’s swift action in this case underscores the importance of child protection and the serious consequences of child endangerment. The case highlights the need for vigilance and immediate reporting of any suspected child abuse to prevent such tragic situations.
