On New Year’s Eve, a rookie police officer who had just started working was attacked with a machete by a man while the officer was on duty in the Times Square area of New York City.
The officer was slashed in the head and taken to a hospital but is expected to recover.
Another police officer was struck with the weapon but was not seriously injured.
The suspect, a 19-year-old man, was shot by another police officer and arrested.
The motive for the attack is not yet clear.
Another police officer was also hit by a police car while trying to move barricades to allow responding officers to reach the attack scene.
